Gustavo Rodríguez
Project Leader for Global Supply Chain
Clariant International(Switzerland)
(ZLOG Class of 2011)

1. Describe your current job responsibilities:
I’m currently a Project Leader for Global Supply Chain at Clariant International, a world leader in production of specialty chemicals for diverse applications. Based in headquarters in Basel, Switzerland, our team works in the development and implementation of market driven Supply Chain strategies for the Business Units of the company with a global scope.

2. Describe your career path before you attended ZLOG:
After graduating as Chemical Engineer in Bogota, Colombia, I started my career in Supply Chain at The Dow Chemical Company were I held different positions in Customer Service, Supply & Demand Planning and Logistics for 5 years. I moved to Syngenta to further develop my managerial capabilities and held positions as Distribution Manager and Operations Project Manager for the North Region of LATAM. After 3 years I decided to pursue an opportunity from a different perspective as manager for a Shared Service Center of a multinational Colombian organization in the paper industry (Organizacion Carvajal).

3. Why did you decide to attend ZLOG?
First of all, after 10 years of professional experience I wanted to make a significant leap in my career. Secondly, I wanted to strengthen my theoretical knowledge in Supply Chain with top-class education complementing my previous certification as APICS CPIM. Last, but not least, I wanted to be exposed to a global environment with different cultures and people creating a totally different life experience.

4. What are the most valuable assets you gained through your ZLOG experience?
Besides deep Supply Chain knowledge, which is an obvious and valuable take-away, the exponential growth of my professional network will last for the rest of my career.

5. How did your ZLOG degree impact your job search?
Having MIT as a partner in your education creates an immediate differentiation in the job market. Being in ZLOG also demonstrated my abilities to work in a global setting, which helped me in the process of moving from the regional scope of my previous positions to the actual one.

6. Does your ZLOG education affect the way you currently do your job?
ZLOG education makes me feel conceptually stronger, which facilitates discussions on the strategic level of the projects I’m working on. From a technical perspective, through ZLOG I obtained a broad set of tools that I can use when specific problems call for them.

7. What would you say to a prospective student thinking about joining the ZLOG program?
Get out of your comfort zone, push your limits; no matter if you’re one of the “oldies” like me, it’s never too late to pursue a top-class Masters Degree and it will contribute to your career. If you want to strengthen your Supply Chain expertise without losing strategic business perspective ZLOG is the right choice and it’s definitely worth the effort required.
