“Design of Experiments as a cost-effective statistical tool for experimentation, with an application on order-picking strategies ”

My talk will be divided into three sections. First, I will give an overview of the research areas, publications and research interest of the Industrial Management Department at Universidad de Montevideo. Afterwards, the main section will deal with a presentation of Design of Experiments (DoE) as a cost-effective statistical tool for experimentation. While experimentation is frequently used in industry and research, the most commonly used strategy is one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT), a generally inefficient strategy. We will present the basic concepts in order to be able to show the utility of DoE in several practical applications. Finally, an application of DoE to evaluate the repercussion that different picking operating strategies have in a Part to Picker system while working under diverse order types will be presented.
